NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Scam artists continue to take a major financial toll on Tennesseans. According to a new report from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), residents lost more than $157 million to fraud in 2024, ranking Tennessee 21st in the nation for fraud cases.
The FTC also reported over 14,000 identity theft cases, placing Tennessee 24th nationwide. Officials warn that scam artists often promise “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunities but instead target hardworking families and seniors.
Authorities urge residents to stay alert:
Don’t answer unknown phone numbers.
Don’t call back or press buttons when prompted.
Never share personal or financial information over the phone.
Anyone who believes they’ve been targeted by a scam should report the incident to local law enforcement immediately.
