Junette Mai Griggs Young, lovingly known as “Nanny Young,” was born on January 6, 1935. She lived 91 years marked by unwavering faith, quiet strength, and deep devotion to her family and community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Grady and Katie Porterfield Griggs; her brother, Howard Griggs; her sister, Julia Williams; her husband, David Young; her infant daughter, Deborah “Debbie” Young; her son, Tracy Young; her infant grandson, Richard Young; her infant great-granddaughter, Charity Young; and her infant great-great-grandson, Westin Higdon.
She is survived by her sons, John (Belinda) Young, Bobby Young, Jimmy (Cathey) Young, Thomas “Tommy” Young, Paul (Wendy) Young, and Richard (Gelinda) Young; and her daughter, Darby (Aaron) Allday; her grandson, Kevin Young, whom she raised as her own; her sister, Hila Kincaid; her brother, Neil (Faye) Griggs; and her sisters-in-law, Peggy Hagood and Charlotte (John) Holley. She was also blessed with 27 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She lived most of her life in the Sumac and Brick Church communities of Giles County, where she faithfully poured into her church, her homemakers club, 4-H, and especially her grandchildren. She served as song leader and Sunday school teacher at Diana Methodist Church for 37 years, dedicating her life to teaching, guiding, and worshiping alongside her church family. Her steady faith, perseverance, and unconditional love shaped generations, and her legacy will continue through the family she nurtured and inspired.
Visitation will be 4-8pm Thursday March 5, 2026 at Carr & Erwin Funeral Home. Funeral will be 1pm Friday March 6, 2026 at Carr & Erwin Funeral Home with interment to follow in Brick Church Cemetery.
